MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Chicago State baseball opened the 2013 season on Friday (Feb. 15) with a 14-0 loss to Alabama State. The Hornets' TJ Renda threw a no-hitter against the Cougars.

Renda was dominant, striking out 15 Cougars over nine innings. Chicago State earned three base runners in the game. Sophomore Nathan Parade de la Feraude (Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek Secondary) (Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek Secondary) was hit by a pitch in the second, senior Eric O'Brien (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino/Eastern Arizona CC) walked in the third and freshman Ray Cekus (Chicago, Ill./Taft) (Chicago, Ill./Taft) reached by an error in the eighth.

“You have to give the kid (Renda) credit,” Chicago State head coach Steve Joslyn said. “He mixed it up well and kept us off balance. We just didn't put the ball in play enough."

The win moves Renda and the Hornets to 1-0 on the season. Chicago State starter junior Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) took the loss and like Chicago State is 0-1 on the year. Sterrett gave up nine runs (seven earned) on six hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

“Dylan pitched solid for us,” Joslyn said. “He should have had a better fate. There were a couple early ground balls that should have been double plays and got him out of trouble but they weren't turned. If Dylan keeps pitching like that we'll be alright.”

Hornets leadoff man Richard Amion, a 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, had five RBI and three runs scored in the game.

The Hornets and Cougars play the second game of their three game series on Saturday (Feb. 16) at 6 p.m.
