Baseball Concludes GWC Weekend Series at Northern Colorado

Senior Jonathan Carpen hit 3-for-4 Sunday at Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. – The Chicago State baseball team concluded its four-game Great West Conference series here Sunday afternoon against host Northern Colorado with a 5-0 defeat at Jackson Field.

The Bears opened the scoring in the first inning when Adam Hilker hit an RBI single which brought home Casey Coy, who reached base via a single two plays earlier for a 1-0 lead. Coy struck again in the third inning as he scored Adrian Schenk, who led off the inning with a triple, with an RBI groundout as the home team increased its lead at 2-0. 

UNC added two more runs in the fifth inning when Colby Harrison blasted a two-RBI single off CSU starting pitcher Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) (Cedar Lake, Ind.) to score Kevin Hurd and Casey Coy to hike its leading margin to 4-0.

In the sixth inning, the Bears increased their lead to 5-0 as Harrison Lambert lined an RBI single up the middle that brought home Park from second after he reached on a one-out double. 

The home team scored its final run of the game in the eighth inning when Tony Crudo hit an RBI single through the right side which scored Lambert from third base.

Senior Jonathan Carpen (Whiting, IN/Clark) (Whiting, Ind.) paced CSU offensively by hitting 3-of-4, while Wellwerts (1-4) took the loss despite recording a season-high seven strikeouts in eight innings thrown and allowed six runs on 14 hits. 

Harrison led UNC with a 3-of-4 effort with two doubles and two RBI. Nate Steinmetz (4-5) threw a complete-game shutout win for the Bears that included striking out seven batters.

The Green and White return to action with a non-conference game at Brooks Field against Western Michigan with a start time of 3 p.m.
