EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Chicago State clobbered Evansville in game one, 17-3, behind three hits and six RBI from
Josh Appelbaum (Chicago, IL/Florida Gulf Coast). The Purple Aces nipped the Cougars in game two of the double-header, 4-3, in extra-innings Saturday afternoon at Braun Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.
CSU stands at 7-39 overall, after the doubleheader split. Evansville are 11-35.
In game one, the Cougars got on the board first on an RBI double by
Jonathan Wilson (Vallejo, CA/Napa Valley CC) that scored Appelbaum who reached on an error, giving CSU an early 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as the Purple aces responded with three runs on four hits taking a 3-1 lead.
CSU would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning an RBI single by freshman
Michael Carpen (Whiting, IN/Clark) that scored
Preston Pires (Waipahu, HI/Kalani HS) who reached on an error and a three-run homerun by Appelbaum giving Chicago State a 4-3 lead.
The Cougars would take a 7-4 lead on single runs in the third as Pires scored on an error and in the fourth on an RBI single by
Kellon McFarlin (Chicago, IL/Meramec CC), plating Carpen who tripled leading off the inning.
Chicago State would pour it on and close out the scoring in the top of the sixth inning as they batted around twice scoring 10 runs on nine hits giving CSU the 17-3 advantage. The inning was highlighted by Appelbaum, who had two singles and three RBI in the frame.
Chris Goya (Kaneohe, HI/Mid-Pacific Institute) improved to 1-7 on the season after pitching a complete game six hitter, allowing three runs, while striking out two.
Every player in the Cougars starting lineup had at least one hit. Carpen finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI while McFarlin finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Sean McCarthy took the loss for Evansville, allowing six hits, seven runs only one earned, struck-out one in 3.0 innings.
In the nightcap, the teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning when CSU got on the board on a homerun to right center by

Evansville tied the game on an RBI single by Nate Smith scoring Tom Freeman who walked leading off the inning.
Chicago State would regain the lead in the top of the fifth as Carpen walked, stole second and scored on an error by the second basemen.
UE would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Shawn Kuester hit an RBI single up the middle plating Peter Tountas who hit a leadoff single.
The teams would go into extra innings and the Cougars took the lead in the top of the eighth, as Pires hit a double to right center and was brought home on an RBI single by
Jeremy Perez (Chicago, IL/Univ. of Dubuque) giving CSU the 3-2 lead.
The Purple Aces battled back and won the game in the bottom-half of the inning on a walk-off double by Greg Wallace giving EU the 4-3 victory.
Chris Freshour (Honolulu, HI/Mid-Pacific Institute) had a strong performance for CSU, pitching 7.0 innings of seven hit baseball, allowing four runs while striking out two in the loss.
Wilson was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
John Carbonell came on in relief to pick up the win for Evansville, pitching the final two innings, allowing three hits and a run.
