MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois swept a double-header from Chicago State, on Saturday afternoon at Boyer Stadium by scores of 8-2 and 6-0.
Western Illinois improves to 3-14 on the season with the sweep, while the Cougars fall to 3-19.
In game one of the day, CSU jumped on the Leathernecks early as
Lacelle McKinley (Gary, IN/Calumet College) was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-run homerun by
Chris Goya (Kaneohe, HI/Mid-Pacific Institute), his first homerun of the season, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The lead was short lived as WIU tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homerun by Drew Laidig, which scored Kenny Price who singled leading off the inning.
Western Illinois would blow the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on four hits giving the Leathernecks the deciding 8-2 victory. The six run eruption was keyed by a bases loaded double by T. J. Kistner that scored two runs.
Chris Goya (Kaneohe, HI/Mid-Pacific Institute) was 3-for-4 at the plate, with two RBI.
Jonathan Wilson (Vallejo, CA/Napa Valley CC) and Jordan Hass each picked up two hits for the Cougars.
Josh Appelbaum (Chicago, IL/Florida Gulf Coast) took the loss for CSU, hurling 4.2 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits.
WIU's Eric Eden pitched eight strong innings, scattering eight hits, gave up two runs, while striking out nine.
In the nightcap, Western Illinois jumped on the Cougars early and never looked back as the Leathernecks scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Jared Wolf led off the inning with a walk, stole second and was driven in on a double by Brett Pendell. Drew Laidig would follow with a double of his own plating Pendell. Cooper Stewart would reach on a on a fielding error by CSU first basemen
Mitchell Johns (Kelseyville, CA/Kelseyville HS) that scored Laidig. WIU would close out the scoring in the inning on a passed ball that scored Stewart.
The Leathernecks would add single runs in the second and eighth innings, giving Western Illinois the 6-0 shutout victory.
Michael Carpen (Whiting, IN/Clark) was 2-for-2 on the day.
Matt Haug (Plymouth,IN/Ancilla CC) would also add two hits.
Robert Vargas (Alhambra, CA/Alhambra HS) strong pitching effort would not be enough as he drops to 2-5 on the season.
WIU's Travis Tolsma pitched a complete game shutout, giving up five hits, while striking out seven.
The Cougars return to the field tomorrow morning as they finish the three-game series with Western Illinois at 11 a.m. in Boyer Stadium.
