DES MOINES, Iowa - The Chicago State track and field teams began their weekend at the third day of the 116th Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The teams put together several strong performances against some of the best competitors in the country.
The Cougars were highlighted by a runner-up finish from Earnest Davenport in the men's high jump. Davenport cleared 2.08 meters to place second overall, marking one of the top performances of the meet. Makiyah Brewton also delivered a podium finish for Chicago State, placing third in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.87 meters. Lena Cleveland added an eighth-place finish in the event with a jump of 5.74 meters.
Khalis Reyes continued his strong season in the men's triple jump, placing sixth with a mark of 14.26 meters. Cleveland also competed in the women's triple jump, finishing 18th with a distance of 11.21 meters.
On the track, Katherine Thornton represented the Cougars in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing 27th with a time of 14.41. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Queanna Taylor, Phebe Thompson, Brewton and Latonia Johnson placed 13th overall with a time of 46.91. The 4x200-meter relay squad of Katherine Thornton, Johnson, Thompson and Taylor added an eighth-place finish, crossing the line in 1:40.36.
In the women's 100 meters, Johnson and Taylor led the way with times of 12.04 and 12.08 to place 24th and 25th, respectively.
Nasir Ali rounded out the meet on the men's side with a 12th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 53.36.
