TERRE HAUTE, IN. - Chicago State track and field competed at the Gibson Invitational hosted by Indiana State from April 17–18, turning in a number of strong performances across distance, sprints and field events.
The Cougars were highlighted by a runner-up finish in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase as Jacob Draaisma placed second overall. Collins Kuyo added a strong showing in the men's 5000 meters, finishing 12th with a time of 15:28.88.
On the track, Chicago State saw success in the hurdles as Katherine Thornton placed seventh in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.13. On the men's side, Faustin Kaseba led the way with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.56, while Jerrick Kelley placed 15th in 15.12 and Michael Rabogo finished 22nd in 15.72. Rabogo also added an eighth-place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.99.
In the middle distance events, Weronika Stanczak delivered one of the top finishes of the meet for the women, placing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.43. Denis Kirui competed in both the 1500 and 800 meters, finishing 36th in the 1500 meters in 4:12.02 and 34th in the 800 meters in 2:03.65. Alexis Fallejo added a time of 2:38.57 in the women's 800 meters.
The Cougars also competed across the sprints. In the women's 100 meters, Jaya Harrigan led the group with a time of 12.45 to place 26th, followed by Azaria Austin in 37th at 12.85. On the men's side, Skylar McGhee paced Chicago State in the 100 meters with a time of 11.06, while Praxton Robinson and Eric Sanchez followed in 11.17 and 11.19, respectively. In the men's 400 meters, Kai Sheridan and Carlton Montgomery Jr. recorded times of 50.77 and 51.32.
In the 200 meters, Sanchez led the men with a 25th-place finish in 22.43, followed by Robinson in 36th at 22.85 and Nasir Ali in 44th at 23.17. On the women's side, Queanna Taylor (26.06), Harrigan (26.25), Phebe Thompson (26.61) and Austin (26.65) all competed.
In the field events, Kendrick Scott delivered a standout performance with a seventh-place finish in the men's discus at 46.96 meters and added an eighth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 15.14 meters. Elijah Gibbs recorded a throw of 13.06 meters in the shot put, while Joshua Keaton posted a mark of 49.76 meters in the hammer throw to place 12th.
On the women's side, Bryanna Boroze placed 13th in the shot put with a mark of 12.23 meters and added a 22nd-place finish in the discus at 32.90 meters. Taylor Norris recorded a throw of 21.76 meters in the women's javelin.
Chicago State also saw strong performances in the jumps. In the women's long jump invitational, Lena Cleveland and Makiyah Brewton each cleared 5.66 meters to place fourth and fifth, respectively. Phebe Thompson and Latonia Johnson added marks of 5.29 meters and 5.19 meters in the open section.
On the men's side, Skylar McGhee placed fourth in the long jump invitational with a mark of 6.81 meters. Lucas Polkinghorn recorded a jump of 6.48 meters, while Khalis Reyes competed in both the long jump and triple jump, placing sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.04 meters.
Luciana Rojas added a ninth-place finish in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.12 meters.
In the high jump, Earnest Davenport led the men with a fourth-place finish after clearing 1.95 meters, while Polkinghorn placed ninth at 1.90 meters. On the women's side, Cleveland cleared 1.55 meters to place 13th, while Fallejo recorded a mark of 1.50 meters.
