STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Chicago State men's cross country team opened up Day One of the NEC Indoor Championships on Sunday. The Cougars competed in the prelim rounds on the track and had some field events open up the team scoring competing for conference championships. The Cougars crowned one conference champion on the day with freshman
Xavier Beatty claiming the high jump conference championship.
Beatty leaped a 7.11m in the long jump on his sixth and final attempt of the afternoon in order to claim his first conference championship of his career and hopefully the first of the weekend for Chicago State. In other event that were competing conference titles, the high jump saw Cougars score huge points for Chicago State. Sophomore
Earnest Davenport finished as the runner-u in the high jump indoor with leao of 2.09m. He now has earn his second silver medal in his career at the Indoor Championships. Freshman
Lucas Polkinghorn, leaped to a fifth place finish adding four points to the Cougars total after clearing 1.97m for the fifth place finish.
On the track,
Faustin Kaseba will head into the finals tomorrow after running the fastest qualifying time of a 8.23 in the 60 meter hurdles. Joining him with be senior
Ishan Cooper who ran an 8.27 with the fourth fastest time and junior
Jerrick Kelley making the final seeded eighth with a 8.63. The trio will look to score huge points and compete for a conference championship in the event tomorrow morning.
Two other Cougars qualified for the finals in their respective events.
Nasir Ali ran a 49.79 in the 400 meters and will go in seeded fifth. Freshman
Jacob Draaisma will compete for the conference title in the 1 mile run with the ninth fastest tine running 4:22.03.
