Thabiso “Boyzzz” Khumalo Joins Chicago State University Men’s Soccer Staff as Assistant Coach

CHICAGO, Ill. (August 1, 2025) — The Chicago State University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the addition of Thabiso "Boyzzz" Khumalo as the new assistant coach for the men's soccer program. A former professional player and respected coach, Khumalo brings a high level of experience and energy to the sideline as he joins Head Coach Norris Howze and the Cougars.

Khumalo was named NAIA Player of the Year in 2001 as a freshman after leading LWC to the national championship, marking the first time a freshman had earned the NAIA's highest honor. Khumalo was named a first team All-America selection and the most outstanding offensive player of the NAIA National Championship as a sophomore.

Following a transfer to Coastal Carolina in 2003, Khumalo earned a pair of All-Big South Conference first team honors in 2003 and 2004 while leading CCU to the NCAA national tournament. A nominee for the Herman Trophy as a senior, Khumalo was the Big South Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2004.
Khumalo turned professional in 2004 and joined the Chicago Fire Premier PDL side before getting the call to the Fire's MLS franchise later that year. After stints in the USL with Charleston and Wilmington, Khumalo returned to his homeland to play for Alexandra United in the Vodacom League before returning stateside and playing for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL and then for D.C. United in a return to the MLS from 2008-10.

"We're excited to welcome Thabiso to the coaching staff," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Norris Howze. "His professional background, strong character, and passion for teaching the game will be a great asset to our program. Our players will benefit greatly from his experience and perspective."

Khumalo added, "It's a privilege to join the Chicago State community. I'm eager to support Coach Howze and help our players grow on and off the field. This program has great potential, and I'm honored to be part of its next chapter."

Khumalo received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a specialization in Recreation and Sport Management from Costal Carolina. He officially begins his role this week, as the team prepares for the upcoming Fall season.
