CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago State Athletics proudly recognizes
Efrain Rivas Jr., a senior defender whose four-year career with the Cougars (2022–2026) has been defined by maturity, adaptability, and a steady presence on and off the field. Rivas concludes his collegiate career with 39 games played and a reputation as a dependable, team-first competitor who helped elevate the men's soccer program during a historic era.
A Rockford, Illinois native and Guilford High School graduate, Rivas arrived at Chicago State with a clear purpose: to grow as both a player and a person. What he didn't expect was that some of his most meaningful memories would unfold far from home.
"The away trips in the 2023–24 season were special," Rivas said. "My teammates and coaching staff made that year specifically very special. Also making it to the OVC playoffs for the first time in program history."
Those moments long bus rides, shared meals, and the camaraderie of travel became defining chapters of his college experience, teaching him lessons that extended well beyond the pitch.
Rivas pursued a bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation/Sports Administration, aligning his academic path with his passion for athletics and leadership.
"Being a student-athlete has shaped me into a new version of myself," he said. "Dealing with high-pressure moments, time management skills, and balancing my lifestyle while being a student and athlete."
The biggest challenge, he admits, wasn't physical, it was emotional.
"The biggest challenge is being away from home and my family."
Still, Rivas found strength in the structure of training, the support of teammates, and the daily discipline required of a Division I athlete. Soccer gave him purpose, belonging, and a framework for personal growth.
"Learned about maturity and how to adapt to a new lifestyle away from home," he said.
On the field, Rivas contributed to one of the program's most significant milestones: Chicago State's first-ever appearance in the OVC playoffs, a moment he considers a highlight of his career.
As he prepares to graduate, Rivas is looking forward to new experiences and opportunities.
"My plans after graduation are to travel, spend time with family, and apply for the professional workforce," he said.
His next major goal is clear:
"Receiving an offer letter for a full-time position in my field."
While proud of his athletic accomplishments, Rivas hopes his legacy at Chicago State is defined by something more personal.
"I hope to leave a sense of humor behind," he said. "I am a very excited and happy guy that likes to take serious moments and turn them into a more relaxed setting."
It's a legacy rooted in joy, connection, and the ability to lift others — qualities that made him a valued teammate and a memorable presence within the program.
