CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago State University men's track and field team claimed victory to open the season scoring 127.5 team points at the Cougar Alumni Open. The Cougar used an all-around team effort and showed flashes of potential in their season opener. The Cougars had three event winners and a lot of top finishers on the day.
The three event winners came early in the day in the field event. First, freshman horizontal jumper
Xavier Beatty won both the long and triple jump titles to open his career. In the long jump he leaped a 7.43 meters which so far, early in the season, has him ranked third in Division I after the first weekend of the season. Beatty then backed up his long jump win by winning the triple jump as well. He put down a jump of 14.24 meters to show signs of what can come from the freshman jumper. Last years NEC indoor high jump runner-up
Earnest Davenport claimed the high jump win by leaping to an eight centimeter personal best by clearing 2.08 meters. After the first weekend of the season, Davenport is ranked eighth national after his performance.Â
