Cougars Remain Undefeated at Home with 90-70 Victory over East-West University

Four Cougars in Double Figures in 20-Point Victory

Box Score Chicago State's men's basketball team earned their fourth consecutive home win with a 90-70 victory over East-West University Monday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars have opened the home schedule with victories over IUPUI, Valparaiso and Southern Indiana and it's the first four-game home win streak since the 2013-14 season when CSU won five straight at home between Nov. 9 and Dec. 16.

Wesley Cardet led four Cougars players in double figures with 24 points. Bryce Johnson added 21, Brent Davis 17 and Jahsean Corbett 11 to go with 13 rebounds for his team-leading seventh double-double.

The Cougars will be back in action Wednesday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at former Western Athletic Conference foe Tarleton
In Stephenville, Texas. The Texans enter the contest with a 8-8 record and 2-2 in the WAC which includes a 6-0 record at their home venue, Wisdom Gym.

1st Half - Chicago State 40, East-West 35
Bryce Johnson opened the scoring for the Cougars and in the game with a layup 12 seconds in
East-West scored on the next possession before CSU went on a 9-0 run on hoops by Brent Davis and Wesley Cardet who scored seven of the nine
The Phantoms converted a pair of free throws Davis and Arol Kacuol scored and the CSU lead was 11, 15-4, at the 14:42 mark
The teams exchanged hoops and the lead remained between eight and 12 points before East-West went on a 13-2 run and the CSU lead was trimmed to a single point, 32-31, with 3:56 remaining in the first half
Jahsean Corbett then scored and converted a free throw to extend the lead to four, 35-31, at the 2:08 mark
The Phantoms countered with a three and Bryce Johnson answered with a Cougars three followed by a pair of Corbett free throws and a 40-34 lead with 39 seconds remaining
East-West finished the scoring with a lone free throw and the Cougars led 40-35 at the half

2nd Half - Chicago State 50, East-West 35
East-West opened the scoring with a three to cut the margin to two, 40-38, just 26 seconds into the second half
Chicago State scored the next five points on a three and a layup by Bryce Johnson to extend the lead to seven, 45-38
The Phantoms answered with a 7-2 run and the Cougars lead was again two, 47-45, with 15:26 remaining
Jahsean Corbett covered a pair of free throws but East-West made a three on their next possession and CSU led by one, 49-48, at the 13:51 mark
Brent Davis opens a 9-2 Cougars run with a three and CSU led by eight, 56-48
Following a Phantoms bucket, CSU reeled off another 9-2 run to extend the lead to 13, 65-52, with 9:45 left to play
Chicago State extended the lead to 20, 78-58, with a 10-2 run at the 5:35 mark
The teams exchanged buckets for the remainder of the game with CSU winning 90-70

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
