"We are excited to welcome Alfred to our program," Bussie said. "He brings a tremendous amount of experience, success and knowledge of the game to our staff. His background in recruiting, player development and building winning programs will be a tremendous asset for our student-athletes and our program as we continue to move Chicago State basketball forward."
Williams comes to Chicago State following a highly successful tenure as the head men's basketball coach at Xavier University of Louisiana, where he compiled a 161-77 record. During his tenure, Williams guided the Gold Rush to seven NAIA National Tournament appearances, including trips in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025 and 2026. His tenure at Xavier also included seven 20-win seasons, with five consecutive 20-win campaigns, along with 20 victories over nationally ranked Top-25 opponents. Williams coached 10 All-Americans and helped more than 30 student-athletes earn their degrees during a 10-year span.
Williams was named Coach of the Year following the 2019-20 season and earned HoopDirt.com NAIA Coach of the Week honors twice. He also served as the NAIA Men's Basketball President during the 2020-21 academic year.
Before taking over at Xavier, Williams spent the 2015-16 season as head men's basketball coach at Harris-Stowe State University, where he engineered a 7½-game turnaround from the previous season and led the program to its first playoff appearance in three seasons. Two players earned all-conference recognition, while seven student-athletes were named to the conference's All-Academic Team.
Williams previously served as an assistant coach at Xavier from 2009-15. During that stretch, the program compiled a 209-83 record, captured four regular-season conference championships and made four NAIA National Tournament appearances. Williams also helped coach eight all-conference selections while 12 student-athletes successfully earned their degrees.
Throughout his career, Williams has developed expertise in recruiting, player development, scouting, video analysis, practice planning, game strategy, scheduling, travel logistics, fundraising and program operations, including budgets and scholarships.
A graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, Williams earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management.
