Cougars Men's Basketball Lose 74-58 at Pacific

The Chicago State men's basketball team lost to Pacific 74-58 Monday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, California, completing the second game of their two-game West Coast road trip, dropping an 81-50 decision to UCSB Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara.

Both teams started slowly at the beginning of the contest as neither team converted a field goal for the first 5:12 of the game before the Tigers scored to go along with three early free throws to jump out 5-0.

The Cougars were 0-of-8 from the field before Brandon Betson made a three to stop a 7-0 Tigers run and stop a 7:49 scoreless streak but the Cougars trailed 7-3 with 12:11 remaining.

At that point, Pacific went on a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 13 before Jahsean Corbett scored on a layup and the Pacific lead was 16-5. Pacific extended the lead to 22-5 with a 6-0 run for a 17-point lead which ballooned to 33-12 halftime lead.

Chicago State shot just 4-of-28 in the first half (14.9 percent) including 1-of-12 from beyond the three-point arc (8.3).

The Cougars warmed up in he second half, scoring 46 points, converting 17-of-32 from the field (53.1) including 8-of-18 from three (44.4) while Bryce Johnson accounted for 24 of those points. The Cougars leading scorer in each of CSU's previous four games, Brandon Betson, scored 14, nine of those coming in the final three minutes of the game. Betson led the team with three assists while Corbett led the team in rebounds with six.

Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet.
