Preview: Volleyball Begins 2021 WAC Tournament Run

Cougars to face Stephen F. Austin in first round

The Chicago State volleyball team (17-9, 9-5 WAC) is set to embark on its second consecutive Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Cougars will face Stephen F. Austin in the first round on Thursday, November 18 at 5 p.m. CT. CSU earned the WAC's No. 3-seed after finishing second in the West Division, just after New Mexico State. No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, whom the Cougars did not play in the regular season, will battle with Chicago State in the opener. Last season, the Cougars earned the program's first conference tournament win, sweeping UTRGV on April 1.

Earlier today, the conference announced that Yanlis Feliz and Tony Trifonov were the WAC Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, another feather in the cap of a historic regular season.

Standing as the most prolific Chicago State volleyball team in the program's Division I era (since 1988), the Cougars have accumulated up a record 17 wins and featured the WAC's top offensive superstar, Feliz. The sophomore outside hitter and WAC Player of the Year finished the regular season with 499 kills, averaging 5.25 kills per set, the most per set in program history. Feliz finishes the regular season slate near the in the top three of NCAA Division I in both categories.

The winner of Thursday's Chicago State vs. Stephen F. Austin matchup will take on the No. 7 Utah Valley vs. No. 2 New Mexico State winner on Friday at 8 p.m. CT.

About Chicago State

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet.
