Chicago State Athletics Honors Women’s Volleyball Senior Leah Palmira Linares Castro

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago State Athletics proudly recognizes Leah Palmira Linares Castro, a senior opposite hitter whose journey from Zapopan, Jalisco, México, to the collegiate courts of Chicago State has been defined by resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to growth. Linares Castro concludes her Cougar career with 24 sets played, 84 matches, 91 kills, 368 total attacks, 350 assists, 20 aces, 159 digs, 3 block solos, 28 block assists, and 128 total points, leaving a meaningful imprint on the program.

From the moment she arrived in Chicago, Linares Castro embraced the challenge of competing far from home, learning a new culture, and balancing the demands of academics and athletics.

"Being a student-athlete has shaped me into a more disciplined, responsible, and hardworking person," she said. "As an international student-athlete, I have also learned how to adapt to a new environment while balancing academics and athletics."

Her greatest test came not during a match, but during the long, difficult months following shoulder surgery, a period that demanded patience, mental toughness, and trust in the recovery process.

"The most challenging part of my athletic career was recovering from shoulder surgery," she said. "It was a difficult process both physically and mentally, but with the support of my teammates and coaches I was able to overcome it."

The experience reshaped her approach to training and strengthened her resilience, reinforcing the importance of consistency over comfort.

Balancing volleyball and academics as an international student required more than discipline it required courage. Linares Castro embraced every challenge, learning to thrive under pressure and grow through discomfort.

"It has taught me time management, teamwork, resilience, and how to stay focused under pressure," she said.

One of her most significant takeaways from college is the value of stepping outside her comfort zone.

"College pushed me to try new things, meet new people, and grow both academically and personally."

Her team-first mentality became a defining part of her legacy. When asked to take on a position she had never played before, she accepted without hesitation.

"I took on a position I had never played before because it was what the team needed, and I embraced the challenge while continuing to push myself and compete every day."

Looking ahead, Linares Castro plans to continue her academic and athletic journey.

"I plan on pursuing a master's in data analytics while continuing my athletic career," she said. "I'm excited for new challenges, new teammates, and opportunities to grow both on and off the court."

For Leah Palmira Linares Castro, the road has never been about ease it has been about courage, growth, and the willingness to push beyond what feels familiar. As she steps into her next chapter, Chicago State Athletics proudly celebrates her achievements and wishes her continued success in all that lies ahead.
