ERIE, Pa. — The Chicago State volleyball team competed to the very end against the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday but fell 3-0 at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, with set scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-15. The Cougars' attack percentage was led by a .316 performance in the second set.
Mercyhurst began the first set opening with a 6-0 run powered kills and two service aces from. Chicago State managed to close the gap to 8-7, with
Zeynep Ertam and
Vasiliki Dagre contributing key points. The Lakers responded with another surge, extending their lead to 13-9. Mercyhurst claimed set one with a 25-13 set victory.
The Cougars battled hard in set two narrowly claiming the set but fell short by a score of 25-23 . The set saw positive offensive production led by
Nayella George and
Vasiliki Dagre delivering crucial kills to tie the score at several points. Despite a late rally by the Cougars that reduced the deficit to 23-22 with a kill from
Leah Linares Castro, Mercyhurst held firm to close out the set.
In the third set, the Lakers establish an early 6-1 advantage over the Cougars. Midway through the set,
Alyssa Ferreira responded with a service ace, narrowing the gap to 8-6, but Mercyhurst maintained their lead extending their advantage to 14-7.
Nayella George attempted to rally the Cougars with a couple of kills, but the set concluded at 25-15 in favor of Mercyhurst.
Chicago State was led by
Nayella George with seven kills, while
Zeynep Ertam led the Cougars with 11 assists. Libero
Alyssa Ferreira was big on the defensive racking up 11 digs on the afternoon also contributing two assists.
