Box Score EVANSTON, Ill. — The Chicago State men's basketball team fell, 111-66, to Northwestern Saturday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston despite the Wildcats going cold from the field to end the first half, making just one of its last 11 shots.
Northwestern made 15-of-19 first-half free throws compared to the Cougars, who converted 5-of-7, coupled with a 15-0 Wildcats advantage in points off turnovers.
To start the game, the Cougars survived an early 9-2 run to knot the game at 9-9 with consecutive scores, starting with a driving layup by
Aaris-Monte Bonds (Denver, CO/Martin Luther King Jr. Early College), followed by an
Isaiah Lewis (Romulus, Mich./) three-pointer and jumper by
Jordan Polynice (San Clarita, Calif. /West Ranch/North Dakota Co. School) to tie the game.
Xavier Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Hopkins H.S.) scored 13 first-half points, including connecting on 3-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc, and the Cougars trailed 51-35 going into the locker room at halftime.
Levelle Zeigler (Oakland, Calif. /Ridgeview HS) finished the game with a team-high 18 points, with 14 coming in the second half. Johnson added 15 points, knocking down three shots from downtown.
Isaiah Lewis (Romulus, Mich./) scored 11 and
Carlo Marble (/West Des Moines Valley) seven, all in the second half. Zeigler did not play in the Cougars first two games of the season and has now led or tied for the team lead in scoring the last two, after putting up 11 at Eastern Illinois. Zeigler also tied for the team lead in rebounds with
Aaris-Monte Bonds (Denver, CO/Martin Luther King Jr. Early College), who each pulled down four boards.
Northwestern had a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures, led by Chase Audige, who led all scorers with 20. Robbie Beran added 19 points, Miller Kopp scored 16, Ty Berry poured in 14 and Pete Nance dropped 12. Anthony Gaines pulled down a team- and game-high 12 rebounds.
Chicago State will continue the non-conference portion of its schedule with a trip to the Joseph J. Gentile Center Wednesday, December 9, to take on the Loyola Ramblers at 2 pm CT.
