Box Score NORMAL, Ill. — The undermanned Chicago State men's basketball team fell, 91-62, to Illinois State Tuesday afternoon at Redbird Arena in Normal, Illinois.
The Cougars dressed six healthy players and led for much of the first half but failed to score in the final 3:35, leading to a 9-0 Redbirds run and a 36-30 Illinois State halftime lead. Chicago State opened the contest with a 10-3 lead behind three-point bucket by
Carlo Marble (/West Des Moines Valley) and
Rajeir Jones (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy).
Each of the six Cougars in uniform scored in a balanced first-half attack, with
Levelle Zeigler (Oakland, Calif. /Ridgeview HS),
Xavier Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Hopkins H.S.) and Marble each scoring seven. For the second consecutive game, Chicago State established a season-low in first-half turnovers with three, compared to four by the Redbirds.
Chicago State's shooting fell cold to start the second half, as Illinois State started to extend the lead. The Cougagrs missed nine of 10 shots and sustained a scoring drought of 4:31 as the Redbirds' lead ballooned to 21 with 12:13 remaining in the game. Illinois State then outscored Chicago State in the second half, 55-32, for the 29-point win.
Johnson led the Cougars with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Marble put up a career-high 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting. while
Ke'Sean Davis (Compton, Calif./Taft Charter H.S.) led all players with a career-high 12 rebounds.
D.J. Horne led paced scorers with 22 points. as he was one of five Redbirds players in double figures.
Chicago State will continue the non-conference portion of its schedule with a trip to the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Illinois, on Friday, December 18, to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies at 6 p.m.
