Box Score Champaign, Ill. — The No. 8 University of Illinois Fighting Illini made eight of their first nine shots and rode that hot start to a 97-38 win over Chicago State Thursday. The victory fell in the second game at the Illinois Multi-team Event at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
The Illini kicked off the game with two commanding runs of 9-0 and 12-2 to jump out to a 21-4 lead, with five different Illinois players contributing to the early scoring.
The Cougars were keyed by senior
Xavier Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Hopkins H.S.), who finished with 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting. He made 2-of-5 of his three-point attempts. Junior
Jordan Polynice (San Clarita, Calif. /West Ranch/North Dakota Co. School) connected on his first four attempts from the field to finish with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Illinois produced a balanced attack, with five players scoring in double figures — led by Ayo Dosunmu's 22 points. Kofi Cockburn tacked on 14 points and led all players with 11 rebounds.
Chicago State will face North Carolina A&T State Friday at 3:00 p.m. in Champaign to close out play in the three-day event. The Aggies opened the four-team event with a 122-60 loss to No. 8 Illinois and will face Ohio in the second game this afternoon.
