Box Score Champaign, Ill. — The Chicago State men's basketball team opened the 2020-21 season with a 84-61 loss to Ohio University in the second game of the Illinois Multi-team Event at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Freshman
Lou Demuth (Luxembourg City, Luxembourg) powered the Cougars, scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point line.
Aaris-Monte Bonds (Denver, CO/Martin Luther King Jr. Early College) was the team's leading rebounder, pulling down seven boards. The 6-foot-6 forward pulled down seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive).
Ohio University used a decisive second-half start to put the game out of reach. The Bobcats led 41-29 at intermission and came out of the locker room at halftime with an 18-2 run to extend their lead to 59-31 with 14:36 remaining in the game. Ohio's Lunden McDay led all scorers with 15 points including 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc.
Early on, the Cougars trailed, 12-11, before the Bobcats connected on back-to-back three point field goals to extend the Ohio lead to 18-11 with 11:58 remaining in the first half. Chicago State managed to pull to within three at 18-15 following an
Andrew Lewis (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Vincent H.S.) layup but the Cougars would get no closer. Three-point shooting told the story in the first half as the Bobcats connected on 5-of-12 attempts (41.7%) while CSU connected on 3-of-14 (21.4%).
Chicago State will take on host No. 8 Illinois Thursday at 11 a.m. CT at the State Farm Center in Champaign. The Fighting Illini opened the four-team event with a 122-60 win over North Carolina A&T State, who Chicago State will play Friday.
