Cougars Battle Tough with Four Players in 4-3 Loss to Oral Roberts

Senior Rohan Wattley recorded a three-set win at No. 3 singles today against Oral Roberts

EDINBURG, Texas – The Chicago State men's tennis team saw itself in a tough battle here this afternoon as it faced Oral Roberts with only four players before falling by a score of 4-3 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

ORU opened the match by winning two of the three doubles flights to post an early 1-0 advantage, but the No. 1 tandem of senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and junior Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) earned a close 6-4 win over Kenneth Boykin and Jan Pehnec to improve their record to 18-7.

Both teams later earned a split in singles play which resulted in the Golden Eagles claiming the victory.

Savard recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Boykin at No. 1, while freshman George Botha (Craddock, South Africa/Gray College Secondary School) defeated Alvaro Santamaria in the No. 3 flight by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) earned a three-set win in his No. 2 match over Pehnec via scores of 2-6, 6-3 and 10-4.

CSU opens Western Athletic Conference play on March 29 at UMKC starting at 1:30 p.m.
