Sims Drops Game-High 20 Points in CSU’s WAC Opener vs. NM State

CHICAGO – Junior Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) led all scorers with 20 points as Chicago State men's basketball opened Western Athletic Conference play this afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a 97-60 defeat to New Mexico State.
 
The Green and White took a 14-10 lead in the opening eight minutes of the game on a jumper from senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) and later increased their lead to 23-18 on a Sims three-pointer at the 8:27 mark. NM State then posted a 19-11 run in the half's last eight minutes to enter halftime with a 42-34 advantage.
 
In the second half, the Aggies opened the second half with a 23-11 scoring drive in a 10-minute stretch to hike their leading margin to 65-45 with 10:23 left in regulation and would easily cruise on to the win.
 
CSU went on to hold advantages in free throw percentage (71%-56%) and steals (5-4) over the visitors in the contest.
 
In addition to recording his fourth 20-point contest of the season, Sims paced the Cougars in rebounding with nine boards. Burns added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in his first taste of WAC competition while shooting 5-of-7 from the field. Junior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) and sophomore Patrick Szpir (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) each contributed eight points.
 
Jemerrio Jones recorded a double-double of 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to lead four New Mexico State players that scored in double figures.
 
Next up for Chicago State is a two-game WAC road swing through the Northwest which begins on Thursday, Jan. 11 at Seattle with a start time of 9 p.m.
