Men’s Basketball Kicks Off Homestand Tonight against Grand Canyon

CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball kicked off a three-game homestand here tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with an 85-58 defeat to visiting Grand Canyon in a Western Athletic Conference battle.
 
The Lopes opened the game with an early 8-1 lead just two minutes into the first half and later increased their advantage to 23-10 at the 8:29 mark en route to a 40-21 halftime lead. GCU took its biggest lead of the game at 55-25 with 15:04 left in the second half and CSU got no closer than 22 for the remainder of the contest.
 
Advantages for the Green and White in the game were in the following categories: fast break points (10-6), bench points (34-24) and blocked shots (4-1). Both teams went on to record eight steals apiece in the game.
 
Senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) led CSU with 16 points and shot 5-of-8 from the field, while fellow senior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) tallied 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) finished with a game-high three blocked shots and junior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) also grabbed seven boards.
 
Alessandro Laver recorded game highs of 28 points and eight rebounds to lead GCU.
 
The Cougars continue their homestand on Saturday afternoon with a WAC contest against defending league champion CSU Bakersfield live on the WAC Digital Network (OTT) beginning at 2:05 p.m.
