Men’s Basketball Drops Close 87-82 Decision to UMKC in Home Finale

CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's basketball team closed its regular season schedule here this afternoon as it dropped a close 87-82 decision to visiting UMKC at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The Kangaroos held a slim 38-36 halftime advantage and held on to a 49-46 lead in the second half for the win. For the game, CSU recorded advantages in steals (12-7), points in the paint (40-24), fast break points (10-4), points off turnovers (28-11) and second-chance points (12-10) while both teams each dished out 13 assists.
 
Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) tallied a new career scoring high with 31 points while adding six rebounds and three steals for the Cougars.
 
Senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) contributed 19 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while graduate student Brian Greene, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Thornton) scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and tied another career high with three steals.
 
Four players scored in double figures for UMKC with LaVell Boyd tallying 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead the way.
 
The Green and White honored Joshua Batson (Chicago, Ill./Curie), Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers), Greene, Jr. and Palmer in a senior day ceremony at halftime.
 
Chicago State travels to Las Vegas for the WAC Tournament at Orleans Arena next week. The Cougars will be seeded seventh in the tournament and face off against No. 2 seed New Mexico State in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 9 with a start time of 6:30 p.m.
