Palmer Tallies 17 Points, Posts 1,000th Career Point at WAC Tourney

LAS VEGAS – Senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) recorded a game-high 17 points and scored his 1,000th career point here this evening as seventh-seeded Chicago State fell to second-seeded New Mexico State, 67-53, in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, held at Orleans Arena.
 
Palmer shot 7-of-16 from the field and also produced a game-high five steals for the Green and White. He later connected on a pair of free throws at the 1:50 mark of the second half to become the 13th member of CSU's 1,000-Point Club and moved into a tie for ninth place on the program's D-I career scoring list.
 
The Cougars opened the game with a 12-5 run in the first five minutes of the game that finished with a jumper by Palmer at the 14:30 mark. A conventional three-point play from graduate student Brian Greene, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Thornton) at 10:41 later increased CSU's leading margin to 19-12, but NM State then posted a 16-6 scoring drive in a nine-minute span to claim a 28-25 lead entering the halftime break.
 
A 25-16 run by the Aggies in a 13-minute stretch to increase their advantage to 53-39 with 6:34 remaining in the game. Greene, Jr. and Palmer each scored four points as part of an 8-4 run by the Green and White over three minutes to pull within 10 at 57-47 at the 3:48 mark before NMSU finished the game by scoring 10 of the final 16 points down the stretch.
 
Greene, Jr. also tallied 17 points to equal a career scoring high in addition to hitting six of his seven attempts from the free throw line. Senior Joshua Batson (Chicago, Ill./Curie) scored a career-high 11 points and dished out three assists in his final collegiate game, while junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) tied a season high by grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Ian Baker tallied 15 points and dished out a game-high five assists to lead NM State.
