Sims, Jr., Palmer Post 20-Point Efforts for Cougars against Seattle U

CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball received a pair of 20-point efforts from sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) here today against visiting Seattle to open a weekend Western Athletic Conference homestand at Quest Multisport. The Redhawks used a big second-half surge to post a 90-65 victory over CSU.
 
Sims, Jr. scored a game-high 26 points and shot 6-of-6 from the free throw line, while Palmer shot 9-of-15 from the field and connected on 5-of-6 free throws to add 23 points to go along with grabbing nine rebounds.
 
SU claimed an 8-4 lead at the 16:22 mark of the first half following a three-pointer from Zachary Moore, but the Green and White would go on an 13-7 scoring run in an eight-minute stretch to take a 17-15 lead with 8:40 left in the stanza which concluded on a jumper in the paint from senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer). A quick 14-7 drive in five minutes helped the Redhawks regain the lead at 29-24 with the 3:06 left after Matej Kavas drained a three.
 
The Cougars finished off the half by tallying seven of the next nine points in the final 2:47 with Sims, Jr. scoring six points during the stretch to slice their deficit to 34-31 heading into intermission.
 
CSU started the second half by tallying six of the first nine points scored in the first minute to even the score at 37-37 at the 18:59 mark when Sims, Jr. hit two free throws.
 
After Seattle U had recaptured the lead at 50-42 following a 13-5 scoring drive over a four-minute span at 14:22 before the Green and White used a 7-2 run in two minutes to close within 52-49 on a conventional three-point play by Palmer with 12:31 left in the game. The Redhawks then posted a 38-16 run in the final 12 minutes to earn the victory
 
In addition to Sims and Palmer, freshman Patrick Szpir (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) contributed six points and three rebounds, and sophomore Delundre Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) recorded four assists for CSU (6-20, 1-8).
 
William Powell recorded a double-double of 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Redhawks (12-11, 4-4).
 
CSU closes out its weekend homestand this Saturday afternoon with a WAC Digital Network showdown against rival Utah Valley at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a start time of 2:05 p.m.
