Kostyuk Win Fourth Straight in Singles as Women’s Tennis Defeats Green Bay

FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – Junior Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) recorded her fourth straight singles win in helping the Chicago State women's tennis team defeat visiting Green Bay, 6-1, here today at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club.

The win broke a five-match losing streak for the Green and White, who opened a short two-match homestand.

Kostyuk knocked off the Phoenix' entrant at No. 2 singles Julie Hermann in straight sets via scores of 6-4 and 6-1 to close out the week with a 3-0 record.

The Cougars kicked off singles play with senior Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia) claiming a win at No. 6 over Maria Neff by identical 6-2 scores followed by junior Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) defeating Chiara Berg at No. 3 with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Redshirt senior Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) clinched the match for the home team with her 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 over Tallie Piaskowski.

Junior Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) recorded a three-set win in the No. 1 battle over Olivia Headford with scores of 6-3, 3-6 and 10-5.

CSU posted an early 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles contests to begin the match.

Kostyuk and Gadacz tallied a 6-3 win over Headford and Hermann at No. 1 then Pangestu and freshman Judit Aubets (Major, Sanauja, Spain/Lluis Peguera) slipped past the GB duo of Sam Pederson and Neff by a 6-4 margin at No. 2

Lloyd and Gamboa played a tightly-contested battle at No. 3 by defeating Piaskowski and Tebon by a 7-6 margin that included a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.

Chicago State concludes its homestand on Feb. 11 against NCAA Division II Saint Joseph's (Ind.) in Homewood with a start time of 4 p.m.
