CSU Men's Hoops Opens Three-Game Road Swing on Saturday at UMKC

CHICAGO - The Chicago State men's basketball team travels to Kansas City this Saturday afternoon to open a three-game road swing as it will battle UMKC at Municipal Auditorium in a Western Athletic Conference contest that begins at 5:05 p.m.

SCOUTING CSU – CSU heads to the final stretch of the regular season sporting a record of 6-21 on the year. The Cougars closed out a short homestand at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center last Saturday afternoon by falling to Utah Valley (54-87). Leading the Green and White is sophomore guard Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale), who currently ranks second in the WAC with a scoring average of 18.7 points per game in addition to shooting 82 percent from the field. Senior guard/forward Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) has posted team highs of 9.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game to go along with 19 blocked shots, a WAC-leading 13 double-doubles and 15.1 points per contest. Senior guard Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) is CSU's top assist maker as he is dishing out two assists a game.

SCOUTING UMKC – UMKC has been on good streak recently as it has won five of its last six games dating back to Jan. 26 to move its season record to 14-13 with a 6-4 tally in WAC play. The Kangaroos extended their current win streak to four in a row after posting wins over Utah Valley (84-76) and Seattle U (102-72) behind the play of senior forward Kyle Steward as he averaged 20 points and nine rebounds a game last week. The top player for UMKC is senior guard LaVell Boyd with averages of 17.9 points, 3.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game, and has connected on 84 percent of his chances at the free throw line. Steward is tied with senior forward Darnell Tillman for the team lead in rebounds at 5.3 boards a game while averaging 10.8 points a game.

SERIES HISTORY – UMKC has tallied a 29- 11 lead all-time against Chicago State which includes a 4-2 mark since the 2013-14 season. The Kangaroos swept last season's series with the Cougars that included an 82-53 win in Chicago on March 5, 2016.

WAC TOURNEY TICKETS ON SALE - Tickets for the 2017 WAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament are on sale now. The tournament begins Wednesday, March 8 with the women's first round of play, followed by a full day of men's action on Thursday, March 9. The championship games will be contested on Saturday, March 11. Currently available for purchase are $125 all-session passes, which consist of entry into 12 games over six sessions. Single-session tickets will not be available for purchase until March 8 and can only be purchased through the Orleans Arena Box Office. DARK HORSE DUNKER – Palmer was selected as one of 16 senior finalists earlier this week for the 2017 State Farm "Dark Horse Dunker" online competition where fans can vote on www.darkhorsedunker.com for the this week. He is matched up against Brendan Taylor of Northwest Christian University in a first-round matchup. The winner of the competition will receive the final spot in the College Slam Dunk Championship in Phoenix during Final Four weekend on March 30.

AIMING FOR A GRAND – Palmer is closing in on scoring 1,000 points for his CSU career entering this week's home slate. He has tallied 925 points and needs 75 points to accomplish the feat heading into Kansas City.

AIMING FOR A GRAND...PART TWO – Owens V is also aiming to score 1,000 points in his Division I career as he has tallied 972 points between stints at CSU and Bethune-Cookman. He is now 28 points shy of achieving this feat going into this weekend's action.

UP NEXT – The Green and White continue their road swing on Feb. 23 in Phoenix as they take on host Grand Canyon in a WAC contest at GCU Arena with the opening tip set for 8 p.m.
