CSU Men’s Basketball Falls at Drake in Back and Forth Road Battle

DES MOINES, Iowa – Chicago State men's basketball had a back-and-forth battle here today against host Drake at the Knapp Center, but a big run late in the second half helped the Bulldogs escape with a 79-67 win.
 
Chicago State jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first two minutes of the first half following a three-pointer by senior Montana Byrd and later took a 10-4 advantage two minutes later on a jumper from junior Anthony Harris. The visitors later used a 22-8 scoring run in a span of nine minutes to bring its leading margin to 32-18 with 4:40 left in the half, but Drake finished with a 17-2 run down the stretch to take a 35-34 halftime lead.
 
After the Bulldogs scored six unanswered points to bring their lead to 41-34 with 18:42 left in the second half before CSU notched a 24-12 run in nearly 10 minutes to recapture the lead at 58-53 at the 8:47 mark that ended on a layup from senior Deionte Simmons. A 26-9 scoring run in the final 8:31 propelled the home team to take the victory.

Chicago State had three players score in double figures for the second straight game with junior Fred Sims, Jr. scoring 25 points. Senior Glen Burns equaled his career scoring high with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and dished out five assists. Simmons recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and a season high-tying 11 rebounds.
 
The Bulldogs also had three players record double digit points as Reed Timmer led all scorers with 32 points.
 
The Green and White head to Milwaukee in the conclusion of their road swing on Wednesday night as they take on Marquette at BMO Harris Bradley Center live on Fox Sports Two with the opening tip set for 8 p.m.
