Chicago State Men’s Basketball Drops 84-73 Decision at UMBC

Senior Glen Burns recorded career highs of 15 points and seven assists today against UMBC

BALTIMORE – Chicago State men's basketball kicked off a four-game road swing here today with the first game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Mainland Tournament as it dropped an 84-73 decision to host UMBC at RAC Arena.

The Green and White opened the game with a 12-2 run in the opening five and a half minutes with four points coming from junior Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and senior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)). After senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) scored a layup to put CSU ahead by a 14-5 margin at the 13:27 mark, the home team went on a 39-25 scoring drive in 13-plus minutes to gain a 44-34 advantage before going into halftime with a 44-36 leading margin.

The Retrievers then went on an 18-7 run in the middle of the second half to take their biggest lead of the game at 79-61 with 3:30 remaining in the game and cruised on to the win.

Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars with Burns tallying a pair of career highs with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and seven assists.

Simmons finished with 11 points and shot 5-of-6 from the field. Redshirt senior Jelani Pruitt (Gary, Ind./Merrillville (Ind.)) posted his first double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, while junior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) also contributed 10 points on the day.

UMBC saw three of its players finish with double figure points on the day, led by Joe Sherburne's game-high 19 points.

The Cougars return to action tomorrow morning when they take on Presbyterian with the opening tip set for 11 a.m.
