Box Score CHICAGO – Junior Fred Sims, Jr. became the 14th member of the Chicago State men's basketball team's 1,000-point club tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center as the Cougars produced a big 113-65 victory over visiting East-West.
Sims scored 15 points to bring his career total to 1,001 while connecting on 5-of-6 from the free throw line and tallying 11 second-half points. He set the mark with a jumper at the 6:57 mark of the second half before sitting out the rest of the contest.
CSU opened the first five minutes of the contest with a 12-4 run that ended with a three-pointer from senior Montana Byrd before the Phantoms scored four unanswered points in less than three minutes to close within 12-8 at the 13:54 mark. A 30-22 scoring drive in the final 12-plus minutes propelled the Green and White to a 51-32 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Cougars opened with a 28-6 scoring run over seven and a half minutes to take their biggest lead at 79-39 with 12:04 remaining and cruised on to the victory.
In addition to Sims, three other CSU players also scored in double figures with senior Deionte Simmons leading the way with a double-double of scoring 17 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Byrd finished with a season-best 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting followed by freshman Jalen Stephens-Holmes recording season highs of 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Glen Burns and redshirt freshman Travon Bell each dished out a game-high seven assists.
Cortland Gillespie led East-West with a game-high 18 points that included shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
CSU heads to Baltimore for the Battle 4 Atlantis Mainland Tournament which begins on Thanksgiving morning against host UMBC in a live ESPN 3 broadcast with the opening tip set for 11 a.m. The game will also have a live broadcast on the Chicago State Radio Network with Julio Rausseo providing the play-by-play call.
