Box Score IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Chicago State men's basketball team opened its 2017-18 season here tonight at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as it battled tough against host Iowa before falling by a 95-62 decision.
The Hawkeyes kicked off the contest with a 10-4 scoring run in the opening three minutes of the first half before CSU used a quick 8-4 scoring drive to slice its deficit to 14-12 on a layup from junior Anthony Harris at the 15:02 mark. Iowa would go on a 38-15 run in the final 15 minutes to gain a 52-27 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Green and White would connect on 50 percent of their attempts from the field and from three-point range to score 38 points, but the home team held on a five-point margin in the half to end the contest.
CSU was led by junior Fred Sims, Jr., who scored a team-leading 15 points in the contest. Junior Rob Shaw fared well in his Cougar debut as he tallied 10 points to go along with game-high totals of six assists and four steals. Sophomore Patrick Szpir tied for game-high rebounding honors with six boards.
The Hawkeyes received game highs of 16 points and three blocked shots from Luka Garza.
Next up for the Green and White is a trip to Indiana on Sunday to take on Purdue at Mackey Arena beginning at 3 p.m. in a Big Ten Network live broadcast.
