Palmer Posts Seventh Double-Double in WAC Opener against UTRGV

CHICAGO – Senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) tallied his Western Athletic Conference-leading seventh double-double as the Chicago State men's basketball team kicked off conference play here tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center as the Cougars fell to visiting University of Texas Rio Grande Valley by a score of 83-64.
 
Palmer recorded 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to posting another game high with three steals. He also connected on 9-of-11 from the free throw line and shot 3-of-6 from the field for CSU (4-13, 0-1).
 
Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) contributed 12 points and set a new career high for rebounds with nine, while senior Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) added 11 points to surpass the 900-point plateau for his collegiate career.
 
Four players scored in double figures for UTRGV (9-9, 1-0) with Nick Dixon recording a game-leading 25 points, and Mike Hoffman posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Cougars continue their conference-opening weekend at home this Saturday afternoon against league-leading New Mexico State with the opening tip set for 2:05 p.m.
