Sims, Jr., Palmer Post Double-Doubles for CSU at UT Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas – Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) each recorded a double-double to lead visiting Chicago State against host UT Rio Grande Valley here as it went into overtime before dropping an 85-77 decision in tonight's Western Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Sims, Jr. finished with 23 points and received game-high rebounding honors after setting a new career-high by grabbing 12 rebounds while shooting 10-of-20 from the field for the Cougars (6-16, 1-4). Palmer recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds for his WAC-leading 11th double-double effort of the season.
 
The visitors opened the first half with an 11-3 lead just four minutes in as graduate student Brian Greene, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Thornton) scored on a transition layup off a steal. CSU later posted its biggest leading margin of the game at 31-16 when senior Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) hit a three-pointer with 602 remaining, but UTRGV closed out the half with a 17-4 run to slice the Green and White's advantage to 35-33 entering the halftime break.
 
A 12-7 CSU run which started the second stanza brought its lead back to 47-40 that concluded with a three-pointer from Sims, Jr. at the 15:37 mark, but the Vaqueros scored 10 unanswered points in three minutes to post a 50-47 advantage with 12:40 left in the half.
 
The Green and White then went on to outscore the home team by a 23-20 margin in the final 12 minutes to even the score at 70-70 which was capped by a layup from Sims, Jr. with 36 seconds remaining to send the game into an extra period. UTRGV then outscored CSU in the extra period by a 15-7 margin to take the duke.

Owens V added 21 points as he connected on 8-of-17 from the field that included going 5-of-8 from downtown, and sophomore Delundre Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) dished out a career-best seven assists for the Green and White.
 
UTRGV (10-12, 2-3) received a game-high 26 points from Antonio Green and 22 points from Nick Dixon.
 
The Cougars return to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center next week for a pair of WAC contest that begins on Thursday, Jan. 26 against CSU Bakersfield with the opening tip slated for 7:05 p.m.
