Sims, Jr., Palmer Guide CSU Men to 77-57 Home Win over Roosevelt

CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's basketball team received big games from sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) as it earned a 77-57 home win tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
Sims, Jr., the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, led all scorers with 28 points while draining five three-pointers and connected on five of his six attempts from the free throw line. Palmer produced his WAC-leading 10th double-double by posting 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in addition to recording a career-best six steals, shooting 10-of-16 from the field and went 6-of-7 from the line.
 
CSU (6-15) went on an 11-5 scoring drive in a span of five minutes that turned a 15-15 tie into a 26-20 advantage at the 9:14 mark of the first half that ended with Palmer draining a pair of free throws. After the visitors evened the score at 26-26 with 8:31 left in the stanza, the Cougars posted a 17-9 drive in the final eight minutes with Palmer tallying seven points to take a 43-35 lead at the half.
 
Roosevelt posted six of the first seven points scored in the second half in five minutes to slice its deficit to 44-41 with Chandler Fuzak closing the quick drive with a jumper in the paint at the 15:04 mark. The tide turned for the home team in the form of a dominating 21-1 run in a nine-plus minute span to hike its leading margin to 23 at 65-42 with 5:40 remaining in the half and RU would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the game.
 
Chicago State held advantages over the Lakers in several categories for the game, including rebounding (41-33), steals (13-2), second chance points (13-2) and points off turnovers (25-8).
 
Sophomore Anthony Eaves (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) added eight points, junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) finished the night with six points and five rebounds, and senior Joshua Batson (Chicago, Ill./Curie) took game-high assist honors after dishing out a career-best six helpers for CSU.
 
The Lakers were led by Carson Hughes as he scored 10 points, while Jake Ludwig and Korey Ryan each contributed nine points.
 
Chicago State heads to Texas on Saturday night with a WAC showdown at UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg against host UT Rio Grande Valley in a live WAC Digital Network broadcast with a start time of 7 p.m.
