Seattle U Knocks Off CSU Men’s Basketball, 65-50

SEATTLE – Seattle U used key runs in the second half to hold serve on its home court tonight at Key Arena when it knocked off visiting Chicago State in a Western Athletic Conference contest by a score of 65-50.
 
The Green and White took an early 4-0 lead in the opening 2:40 of the first half thanks to a pair of layups from senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) and later hiked their leading margin to 7-3 on a three-pointer from sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) at the 16:34 mark. After CSU took its biggest lead of the stanza at 22-15 with 4:41 left in the half on another three from Sims, Jr., SU went on a 13-4 scoring run in the final four minutes to go into halftime with its first lead of the contest at 28-26.
 
The Redhawks (9-9, 1-2) opened the second half with 19-9 scoring drive over a 10-minute span to increase their lead to 47-35 with 9:50 remaining and later coasted to victory.
 
Sims, Jr. led CSU (5-15, 1-3) with 18 points on the evening, while Palmer recorded 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for his WAC-leading ninth double-double of the season.
 
Matej Kavas scored a game-high 24 points to lead three players that scored in double figures foe Seattle U.
 
The Cougars take a break from conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 18th when they take on Roosevelt at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a start time of 7 p.m. in a live broadcast on WVON 1690 AM.
