Sims, Jr. Posts First Collegiate Double-Double in CSU’s Win at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) produced his first collegiate double-double in leading the Chicago State men's basketball team to its first Western Athletic Conference victory of the season here at the UCCU Center Thursday night with a 70-61 win over host Utah Valley.
 
Sims, Jr. scored a game-high 25 points and set a new career high for rebounds with 10 in addition to shooting 5-of-6 from the free throw line for the Cougars, who saw their record improve to 5-14 overall and 1-3 in WAC play with the win.
 
The Wolverines broke an early 6-6 tie through the opening seven minutes of the first half by tallying 11 unanswered points in a three-minute span to gain a 17-6 advantage at the 9:47 mark. CSU would outscore the home team by a 22-16 margin in the final nine-plus minutes to slice its deficit to five at 33-28 heading into intermission.
 
UVU opened the second half by scoring five of the first eight points scored in a minute and a half to increase its lead to 38-31, but the Cougars caught fire by going on a 22-2 run which lasted five-plus minutes with Sims, Jr. scoring 11 of those points to take their first lead of the game at 53-40 with 10:53 left in the half.
 
The home team responded with a 10-0 run in less than two minutes to pull within three points at 53-50 with 8:26 left in the game, but CSU ended the game with a 17-11 scoring drive in seven minutes that included going 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory.
 
Senior Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and connected on 4-of-5 from three-point range while dishing out four assists. Senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) narrowly missed out on a double-double as he grabbed 11 rebounds and added nine points, while junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) recorded eight points to go along with a game-high three steals for CSU.
 
Brandon Randolph scored 12 points, and Isaac Nielson produced game highs of 13 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead Utah Valley (8-9, 0-2).
 
The Cougars now head to the Pacific Northwest to battle host Seattle U on Saturday night at Key Arena in a WAC contest with the opening tip scheduled for 9 p.m.
