Box Score
MACOMB, Ill. – Chicago State volleyball continued its road swing here tonight with its first midweek match of the season against rival Western Illinois at Western Hall, but the Fighting Leathernecks claimed a 3-1 (25-21, 14-25, 25-15, 25-17) victory.

The Green and White took an early 3-0 lead in the first set on a kill from junior Shedella Smith (Victorville, Calif./Hesperia), but the home team would go on an 8-2 run to gain an 8-5 lead on a kill by Melanie Patenaude. The Fighting Leathernecks later broke a 9-9 tie with a 7-2 scoring drive as they regained the advantage at 16-11. CSU then would use a 10-5 run of its own to even the score at 21-21 before WIU scored the final four points to gain a 1-0 match lead.

The visitors rode the serving momentum of freshman Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) in the beginning of the second set to take a 10-3 advantage as she served five consecutive points which included a service ace. After the Leathernecks closed to within five points (12-7), the Cougars closed the set out by scoring 13 of the final 20 points played to send the match into intermission tied at one set apiece.

WIU opened the third set with an 8-2 lead and later hiked its lead to 15-8 on a Patenaude service ace en route to cruising to a 2-1 advantage.

The fourth set saw the home team open with a 10-5 lead on a kill from Riley Schumacher, but CSU came back to score 10 of the next 17 points to slice its deficit to 17-15 following a kill from freshman Sofia Gruden (Washburn, Ill./Metamora) before the Leathernecks finished the match with an 8-2 run down the stretch.

CSU was paced by juniors Kelsey Taylor (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian School) and Juma Armando (Toronto, Canada/Archbishop Romero) as both players finished with double-doubles. Taylor recorded 16 assists and 15 digs, while Armando tallied 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Dzeni Hadzisehovic (Belgrade, Serbia/First Private School for Catering and Tourism) also posted 10 kills and fellow senior Kiana Chaney (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek) produced 16 digs.
