Cougar Men’s Basketball Falls to Seattle at the Buzzer

SEATTLE – Chicago State men's basketball continued its three-game road swing Thursday night with a Western Athletic Conference battle against host Seattle at KeyArena before a Brandon Westendorf buzzer-beating three gave the Redhawks a 59-56 victory.
 
The Green and White gained a 13-10 lead with 7:57 left in the first half on a layup by junior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) before SU tallied 15 unanswered points to capture a 25-13 advantage at the 2:56 mark that ended with a Jadon Cohee three-pointer. CSU closed the half with by scoring nine of the final 14 points with Palmer (five points) and senior Devon Friend (Joliet, Ill./Bolingbrook) (four points) leading the way to pull within 30-22 at the half.
 
A 19-9 scoring run in eight minutes helped the visitors reclaim the lead at 41-39 after junior Elliott Cole (Chicago, Ill./Powerhouse) canned a three-pointer at the 12:04 mark. Both teams then battled through three ties and two lead changes in another eight-minute stretch before Friend scored two baskets in a minute to give the Cougars a 54-50 lead with 2:36 left in the half.
 
Palmer scored a layup with 36 seconds remaining to put CSU ahead 56-53 before Westerndorf connected on a three to even the score at 56-56 with 25 seconds left. The Green and White had a chance to win with five seconds remaining, but missed a three and Westendorf grabbed the rebound setting up the final play.
 
Palmer led Chicago State (4-21, 0-8) with game highs of 15 points, five assists and three steals to go along with seven rebounds. Cole added 14 points and shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while Friend contributed 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and six boards.
 
The Redhawks (11-11, 5-3) also had three players score in double figures with Westendorf finishing with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
 
The Cougars finish off their road swing this Saturday night with a WAC Digital Network broadcast at CSU Bakersfield with a start time of 7 p.m., Pacific Time (9 p.m., Central).
