Cougars Drop Heartbreaker at Utah Valley, 74-72

OREM, Utah – Chicago State men's basketball opened its final road swing of the season here Thursday night in heartbreaking fashion as it dropped a 74-72 decision to host and Western Athletic Conference rival Utah Valley in the final seconds at the UCCU Center.
 
After CSU gained a 16-8 advantage within the early minutes of the game, the home team then went on a 21-2 in a five-minute span to capture a 29-18 lead at the 7:06 mark. The Green and White responded with a quick 10-2 scoring drive to slice its deficit to three points (31-28) at intermission.
 
UVU then opened the second half with eight unanswered points in a minute and a half which helped increase its leading margin to 39-28 with 18:23 remaining in the stanza. The Cougars would stay in the game during the half as they scored 34 of the next 67 points to eventually tie the score at 72 at the 1:07 mark on a three-point play by freshman Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale)
 
CSU had a chance to take the lead, but missed a three-pointer with 30 seconds left in regulation before Marcel Davis hit a jumper with a second left for the home team.
 
Sims led three Chicago State players in double figures as he scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field. Redshirt sophomore Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) added 17 points and connected on 7-of-12 from the field to go along with three steals, while freshman Anthony Eaves (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) tallied 14 points and senior Devon Friend (Joliet, Ill./Bolingbrook) posted a team-best seven rebounds.
 
Konner Frey recorded 14 points and grabbed a game-leading nine rebounds to lead the Wolverines.
 
CSU concludes its road schedule Saturday night at Phoenix with a WAC contest at Grand Canyon with a start time of 7 p.m., Mountain Time.
