CSU Men Falls at Central Michigan, 90-82, in Last Tuneup for WAC Play

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Chicago State men's basketball team had three players score in double figures here today in its final tuneup for Western Athletic Conference play that begins next week by falling to host Central Michigan by a score of 90-82 at McGuirk Arena.
 
Both teams started the first half with three lead changes and two ties before the Cougars went on a 9-2 run in three minutes that turned a 9-6 deficit into a 15-11 advantage with 13:30 left in the half on a jumper from sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale), who scored four points during the run.
 
CMU responded by going on a 23-7 scoring drive which lasted almost seven minutes to regain the lead at 34-22 with 6:45 remaining following a three-pointer from David DiLeo. The visitors finished the half by posting a 22-13 run in the final six minutes to go into halftime trailing by a score of 47-43.
 
CSU continued its comeback during the second half as it scored 13 of the next 22 points, including nine points from Sims, Jr., in a five-minute span to even the score at 56-56 with 15:03 left after senior Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) scored a layup.
 
After another Owens V layup at 14:14 gave the Cougars a 58-56 lead, the Chippewas produced a quick 12-3 run in nearly four minutes to take back the lead at 68-61 at the 10:35 mark. Both teams then went through a five-minute stretch with three ties and six lead changes before the Green and White took a 76-75 lead at 5:10 on a tip-in from senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) off a CSU missed shot. The home team then finished off the game with a 14-7 run in the final 4:58 for the win.
 
Sims, Jr. scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed a career-best eight rebounds and connected on all five of his free throw attempts to lead three players in double figures for Chicago State (4-12). Palmer tallied his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds while posting a game-high three blocked shots. Owens V tallied 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting for CSU.
 
Central Michigan (10-3) finished the game with six players scoring in double figures, led by Josh Kozinski's 20 points.
 
The Green and White make their return to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center on Jan. 5 when they host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the WAC Opener for both teams. The game will be broadcast live on the WAC Digital Network and WVON 1690 AM with the opening tip set for 7:05 p.m.
