Cougars Get Three Players to Score in Double Figures in 80-61 Loss at Valpo

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Three players scored in double figures here tonight for the Chicago State men's basketball team but could not overcome an early first-half deficit to host Valparaiso in an 80-61 loss at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
 
The home team shot 50 percent from the field in the first half en route to posting a 37-16 lead at the half. CSU would come back in the second half with a 37-29 scoring run through a near 14-minute span to slice its deficit to 66-54 with 6:07 left in the half after senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) converted a conventional three-point play. Valpo then sealed the game with a 14-7 run in the final five minutes.
 
The Green and White would hold advantages in the contest over Valpo in steals (12-6), offensive rebounds (11-6), points off turnovers (21-12) and second-chance points (11-9).
 
Palmer nearly recorded a double-double as he finished with 18 points and nine rebounds to go along with five steals to set a new career high in that category. Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) added 17 points that included scoring 15 in the second half, and fellow sophomore Delundre Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) equaled his career scoring high with 12 points.
 
The Crusaders were led by Shane Hammink's game-high 22 points while 8-of-11 shooting from the field, while Alec Peters, the nation's second-leading scorer, added a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
 
CSU concludes its 12-game road swing on Friday at Central Michigan in an ESPN3 live broadcast with a start time of 4:30 p.m.
