Cougars Fall to Troy in Las Vegas Classic Title Game

LAS VEGAS – Despite having three players score in double figures, the Chicago State men's basketball team closed out the 2016 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic here this evening at Orleans Arena with an 83-65 loss to Troy in the Upper Bracket title game.

The first half was mostly a back-and-forth affair between both teams which saw seven ties and seven lead changes before Troy went into halftime ahead by a 40-36 margin. CSU began the second half with layups from junior Montana Byrd (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) to even the score at 40-40 with 18:13 remaining, but the Trojans would go on a 43-25 scoring run in the final 18 minutes to seal the win.

The Green and White went on to hold advantages over Troy in rebounding (36-35), points off turnovers (13-11) and second chance points (17-12) while both teams each tallied 22 points in the paint.

Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Cougars (4-10). Palmer and sophomore Delundre Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) each contributed 12 points while Dixon set a new career scoring high in addition to shooting 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) grabbed a season-best 10 rebounds, and senior Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) posted four assists and three steals.

Troy (8-6) had four players score in double figures and was paced by Jordan Varnado, who tied Sims, Jr. for top scoring honors with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting.

CSU returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 28 with a trip to Indiana to battle rival Valparaiso on ESPN3 with a start time of 6 p.m.
