Sims, Jr. Ties Career Scoring High in CSU’s Road Opener at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) equaled a career high for scoring with 26 points to lead the Chicago State men's basketball team in its 2016-17 road opener here tonight at the Kohl Center as it dropped a 69-51 decision to ninth-ranked Wisconsin.
 
The visitors claimed an early 8-0 advantage in the opening two minutes of the first half which included a pair of three pointers from Sims, Jr. UW then went on to score 19 unanswered points in an eight-minute span to gain a 19-8 advantage with nine minutes to go in the half, but CSU closed out the half by scoring 16 of the half's final 29 points to slice its deficit to 32-24 at intermission.

Wisconsin bounced back in the second half by outscoring the Green and White by a 37-27 margin to earn the victory.
 
Sims, Jr. shot 10-for-22 from the field and connected on 6-for-11 from three-point range to lead the Cougars (1-1), while junior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) added 12 points and two steals. Freshman Patrick Szpir (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) grabbed a team-leading five rebounds to go along with two steals and junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) posted two blocked shots.
 
Vitto Brown scored 12 points to lead three players in double figures for the Badgers (2-1).
 
CSU closes its short road swing this Saturday afternoon at Oakland in Rochester, Mich., in an ESPN3 live broadcast with the opening tip for 2 p.m.
