Men’s Basketball Defeats Illinois Tech in Season Opener, 97-89

CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball began its 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon with huge fanfare on Homecoming as it defeated Illinois Tech by a score of 97-89 at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The Green and White held advantages over Tech in several categories that included assists (26-14), steals (10-5), blocked shots (6-3), points off turnovers (21-11) and bench points (22-12). As a team, CSU shot 53 percent (34-of-64) from the field and connected on 52 percent (12-of-23) from three-point range.
 
Senior Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) tallied a season-best 26 points as the Cougars had three players score in double figures. Owens V connected on 9-of- 12 shooting, including 5-of-6 from downtown, while contributing five rebounds and three assists.
 
Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) finished 7-of-16 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line for 19 points to go along with a career high-tying four assists, four steals, three rebounds and a career-best two blocked shots.
 
Junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) added 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) grabbed six rebounds and junior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) dished out a game-high six assists for CSU.
 
Illinois Tech had four players score in double figures with Anthony Mosley, Jr. tallying a game-high 27 points, while Samuel Rarick posted a double-double with 15 rebounds and 12 points.
 
The Cougars hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday, Nov. 17 when they travel to No. 9/10 Wisconsin in an ESPN3 live broadcast with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
