Gamboa, Pulgar Earn Semifinal Berths on First Day of Bronco Invite

Junior Lorea Gamboa advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round of the Silver singles bracket at the Bronco Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Junior Lorea Gamboa (Gamiz-Fika, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and sophomore Monica Pulgar (Madrid, Spain/San Jose de Cluny) captured first round singles wins in the Silver Bracket to highlight the CSU women's tennis team's first day here at the Bronco Invitational, held at Western Michigan's Sorensen Courts.

In the Silver flight, Gamboa earned a semifinal date tomorrow with Valparaiso's Morgan Paras after posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Green Bay's Samantha Pederson. Pulgar defeated Hailey Bruining of Lewis in a first-round battle by identical 6-0 scores to advance to the semifinals, where she will take on Theresa Tebon of Green Bay.

Redshirt senior Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) then opened round robin singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Noel Peck and will take on Valparaiso's Erin Stall in her second match tomorrow.

After dropping first-round doubles matches in the Betsy Kuhle bracket, the Green and White saw two of its tandems capture wins over Green Bay to advance to Saturday's consolation semifinal round.

Juniors Leshia Gadacz (Toronto, Ontario/Loretto Abbey) and Mariya Kostyuk (Kyiv, Ukraine/International School) claimed a 6-2 win over Olivia Headford and Jule-Sophie Hermann, while Lloyd and Gamboa teamed up to defeat Pederson and Chiara Berg by a score of 6-2.

CSU will continue the second day of the invitational tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
