Volleyball Captures First WAC Victory with 3-2 Home Win over Grand Canyon

CHICAGO – The Chicago State volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to capture its first Western Athletic Conference victory in program history tonight with a 3-2 win over visiting Grand Canyon at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
 
The win also snapped a 47-match losing streak in WAC play dating back to 2013 and it marked the Cougars' first conference win since Nov. 12, 2011 when they posted a 3-2 victory at NJIT as a member of the Great West Conference.
 
GCU captured a close 36-34 win in the first set and followed that with a 25-16 win in the second set to go ahead 2-0 entering intermission, but CSU sent the match into a deciding fifth set with a 25-20 win in the third set and a 25-19 victory in the fourth set. The Green and White earned a hard-fought 15-13 win in the fifth set after scoring five of the final seven points played to rebound from an 11-10 deficit.
 
Chicago State (3-15, 1-3) had four players record double-digit kills, led by senior Dzeni Hadzisehovic (Belgrade, Serbia/First Private School for Catering and Tourism) with 13 kills to go along with five block assists. Junior Juma Armando (Toronto, Canada/Archbishop Romero) recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while freshman Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) also tallied 10 kills and five block assists.
 
Junior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) also recorded 10 kills on the night, while freshman Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) tallied 20 digs and a match-best four service aces. Junior Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) dished out a season-high 32 assists for the Green and White.
 
Jordyn Sanchez tallied a match-high 20 kills to lead Grand Canyon (4-12, 0-4), while Heidi Carpenter dished off a match-best 50 assists and Sara Westerman notched match high dig honors with 22.
 
The Cougars close out their weekend WAC homestand on Saturday against CSU Bakersfield at the Dickens Center with the first serve set for 12 p.m.
