Chicago State Battles Tough in 82-76 Home Loss to Utah Valley

CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball closed out its three-game homestand with a battle against Utah Valley in a Western Athletic Conference showdown Saturday afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center before the visitors earned an 82-76 win.
 
The visitors posted an early 8-5 lead at the 16:15 mark of the opening stanza on a three-pointer from Ivory Young before CSU went on to score 22 of the next 41 points in seven-plus minutes to gain its biggest advantage of the contest at 28-19 following a pair of free throws from freshman Delundre Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Auburn).
 
After junior Elliott Cole (Chicago, Ill./Powerhouse) hit a jumper to increase the Cougars' lead to 33-28 with 3:30 remaining in the half, UVU finished the stanza with a 7-2 run to head into intermission down by a 35-33.
 
Utah Valley started the second half with a run that saw it tally 28 of the first 38 points scored to capture a 61-45 lead after Konner Frey hit a three with 11:21 left in the game.
 
The Green and White later bounced back by going on a 29-13 scoring drive in over nine minutes with Cole posting 12 points during the run to even the score at 74-74 after junior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) scored a layup at the 1:25 mark. The Wolverines then scored eight of the game's final 12 points, all at the free throw line, to claim the win.   
 
Palmer tallied his sixth double-double of the season by producing 19 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds while shooting 7-of-10 from the field and connected on all three of his attempts from three-point range. He also contributed a game-leading two blocked shots and two assists.
 
Cole shot 8-of-14 from the field to finish with 18 points and redshirt sophomore Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) contributed 14 points. Dixon dished out a season-best six assists and tied another with two steals.
 
Utah Valley (9-11, 3-2) was led by Jaden Jackson's game-high 22 points that included going 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
 
CSU opens a three-game WAC road swing on Jan. 30 at Missouri-Kansas City in a broadcast on the WAC Digital Network with a start time of 2:05 p.m.
