Cougars Travel to Georgia for Bash at the Boro Invitational

Sophomore Arieta Vaimaona and the Chicago State volleyball team will take on Winthrop, Tennessee State and host Georgia Southern this weekend at the Bash at the Boro Invitational
This Week: Chicago State volleyball travels south to Statesboro, Ga., this weekend for the Bash at the Boro Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern. The Cougars open the tournament on Friday with matches against Winthrop (2 p.m., CT) and Tennessee State (5 p.m., CT) before facing the host Eagles on Saturday morning at 9 a.m., central time.

Scouting Chicago State: CSU heads into this weekend's competition sporting a season record of 0-6 after falling to Central Connecticut State (0-3), Morgan State (0-3) and host UIC (1-3) at the UIC Invitational last weekend. The Green and White are led in hitting by junior outside hitter Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule) and sophomore middle hitter Arieta Vaimaona (Lauli'i, American Samoa/Faga'itua), who are averaging 2.47 kills per set apiece. Sophomore setter Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) has produced team highs in assists (7.42 aps) and service aces (six), while senior middle hitter Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) leads the Cougars in blocks (11 – 0.58 bps) and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Shontanae Addison (Little Elm, Texas/Wakeland) is tops in digs with an average of 3.68 per set.

Scouting Winthrop: Winthrop brings a season record of 0-7 into Statesboro after participating in the Carolina Classic last weekend where they dropped decisions to Furman (1-3), Clemson (0-3) and South Carolina (2-3). Redshirt freshman outside/right side hitter Lourdes Rosario has produced a team-best 3.41 kills and 2.00 digs per set to lead the Eagles. Freshman setter Madilyn McCarty is dishing out a team-leading 9.21 assists per set and senior middle blocker Rachel Lenz is the team's top blocker with 27 stuffs (five solo, 22 assisted – 0.96 bps) on the year. Junior defensive specialist Maria Volstad has tallied a team-high 4.00 digs per set.

Scouting Tennessee State: Tennessee State has produced a 0-4 season record entering this weekend's action. The Lady Tigers fell to former Ohio Valley Conference foe Samford, 3-2, in their home opener at the Gentry Center on Sept. 5. Junior outside hitters Arijana Anderson and Chloe Watson are the top kill leaders for TSU with each player averaging 2.75 kills per set, while sophomore setter Samantha Beltran is recording 6.50 assists a set. Watson is also tied for the team lead in blocks with freshman middle hitter Ayanna Chase at an average of 0.88 blocks per set and senior libero Madison Halterman is producing a team-high 3.94 digs per set.

Scouting Georgia Southern: Georgia Southern has posted a 3-4 record into its home opening weekend after going 1-2 last weekend at the Georgia Challenge in Athens, Ga. The Eagles captured a 3-1 win over host Georgia, but fell to Kennesaw State (2-3) and Georgia Tech (0-3). Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Spencer has produced a team-best 3.08 kills per set. Senior setter Kat Minnerly is the team leader in assists (6.35 aps) and digs (2.27 dps), while freshman middle blocker Lauren Reichard leads GSU with 25 blocks (five solo, 25 assisted) for an average of 1.15 blocks per set.
 
Road Warriors: The Cougars are in the middle of a stretch in which they're playing the first month of the season away from home with four tournaments and a mid-week road match at Green Bay next Tuesday. CSU kicks off a seven-match Western Athletic Conference home schedule at the Jacoby Dickens Center on Sept. 24th against Utah Valley.

All-Tournament Cougars: Two CSU players have been recognized for outstanding play so far during the tournament portion of its schedule by capturing all-tournament honors. Sophomore Shontanae Addison (Little Elm, Texas/Wakeland) averaged 4.40 digs a set last week to gain all-tournament accolades at the UIC Invitational. In the season-opening USC Women of Troy Baden Invitational, junior Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule) was selected to the all-tournament team.

Up Next: CSU continues its season-opening road swing in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Sept. 15 with a mid-week contest at Green Bay that will be featured on ESPN3.com with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
