Men’s Basketball Ends Emerald Coast Classic with Close Loss

Junior Elliott Cole tallied 14 points in Saturday's Emerald Coast Classic finale against Alabama State and was named to the all-tournament team

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Chicago State men's basketball concluded the 2015 Emerald Coast Classic here Saturday by dropping a close 66-64 loss to Alabama State at the Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College.
 
The Cougars broke an early 6-6 tie in the first half with a 35-19 scoring run in a span of 12 minutes with junior Jordan Madrid-Andrews (Denver, Colo./Bishop Machebeauf) scoring eight points to capture a 41-25 advantage with a minute left before Alabama State scored four unanswered points to go into intermission down by a 41-29 deficit.
 
After junior Elliott Cole (Chicago, Ill./Powerhouse) drained a three-pointer which gave the Green and White a 49-36 lead at the 17:24 mark of the second half, the Hornets came back with a 28-12 run in 16-plus minutes to gain a 64-61 lead that ended with a pair of free throws from Jamel Waters with 31 seconds remaining. A three-pointer from senior Jawad Adekoya (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) evened the score at 64 at the 21-second mark before ASU scored on a last-second layup for the win.
 
CSU (3-4) was paced by Cole and Madrid-Andrews as each player finished with 14 points while Madrid-Andrews grabbed a game-leading eight rebounds and Cole was named to the all-tournament team.
 
Waters produced game high totals of 19 points and five steals to lead Alabama State (3-3).
 
The Cougars head to DeKalb, Ill., this Wednesday night to battle Northern Illinois in an ESPN 3 online broadcast with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
